Story behind the art:
Laguna Beach artist David Michael Vaughn was invited to see the restoration of three of the cottages at Crystal Cove during the summer of 2023. David has loved Crystal Cove and the historic significance of the park, cottages and beach for many years, and was truly excited to get a chance to see the newly remodeled cottages. This wonderful experience gave David the inspiration to make several new artworks in honor of this magical place.

"Sea Island Lady at Crystal Cove" shows an interior view of newly restored cottage 4 A. The art was inspired by David seeing a vintage book collection inside the cottages when he toured them last summer. One of the period accurate books was entitled A Sea Island Lady. It is set on the east coast in the town of Beaufort and the sea islands nearby and written by Francis Griswold. David imagined the lead character perhaps visiting Crystal Cove after the conclusion of the book, or perhaps it is one of her daughters? Regardless, the title stuck as great name for the art and is borrowed as tribute. We see a woman who has arrived at Crytal Cove enjoying the view of the beach outside the cottage. It is a moment of personal enjoyment and solitude. The viewpoint is that of the cottage's perspective; thus making the cottage itself a character in the composition. The timeless interior that has welcomed countless visitors throughout the century of its existence is portrayed in quiet beauty.

David creates every nuance of the art from cutting, sanding and preparing the wood, painting the main art, and then pouring the final coat of resin. The result is a loving representation of this timeless scene created in David's signature artistic style.
