Story behind the art:
"This artwork is my tribute to The Year Of The Dragon 2024. As I
was working on the research for the work, I found out more
specifically, it is the Year Of The “Wood” Dragon. As I use exotic
woods in so much of my artwork, it seemed like it was calling
me! This fueled my desire to create a work that would be both
authentically inspired by Asian traditions and also merged with
a narrative that I hope to be globally unifying and relatable. This
Dragon is a fierce, yet, positive energy Dragon. He is loyal and
sticks by your side. He is the Protector Of Dreams: Your dreams
and those people you care about. This Dragon is about power
and wisdom combined, and represents creative energy reigning
over the heavens. The Dragon has his left hand on top of an
earth like orb. This orb is hand crafted from wood, and the
Asian and American continents of east meets west are wood
burned onto the disc and then painted. This is an homage to
the Foo Dog traditional design where the left paw stands upon
the world globe as a guardian representing protection,
strength, and courage.
Next, The Dragon is playing his treasured Chinese Guzheng, a
musical instrument. His right hand plays the miniature Guzheng and one of his claws is an actual Guzheng pick. Akin to a
guitar pick and worn by Guzheng players on a finger. A Firework Sparkler can be seen to the left of the Dragon with half
round Mabe pearls used in the design.
Above the Dragon is a Lotus Flower rising into the heavens from the water. Gold leaf gilding is the medium for the moon
or sun depending on the time of day the art is viewed. The Lotus symbolizes rising from a dark place into beauty. It is a
sign of purity, strength, resilience, and rebirth. Jade stones are used in the Dragon’s tail and diamond dust is mixed into
the pigments of several parts of the painting. This 2024 Dragon stands guard and watches over you while you sleep and
while you are focused on living your dreams. Your dreams are safe and will flourish under his watchful, blue crystal eyes!"
